1975 was the beginning of the AMA Amateur Nationals. Millville hosted the Midwest Region which had Tommy squaring off against a young future 3 time National Champion Mark Barnett. Tommy made a pass on Barney in moto 1 and was looking like a strong winner until his CR 125 frame snapped. He was done for the day as the ruling was that you finish the day with the frame number you started on. (Cambridge, 1975)
