Earl Chase
1924 - 2007

Earl was known for "making good time" when traveling.
Earl Howard Chase passed away Sunday, November 25, 2007 of Lung Cancer. Born November 14, 1924 in Roosevelt, MN to Howard and Ruth (Johnson) Chase, Earl grew up near Lake of the Woods, working on his father’s farm and others. He kept up with his studies, even being sent to the Twin Cities to represent the county in a spelling bee. Shortly after graduating from high school, he joined the Navy and served two and half years on an LST in the South Pacific during WWII.

Earl is known by many as the one who was serving the drinks. Starting as a bar boy at the Nicollet Hotel in the early 50s, he worked as a bartender or bar manager for the rest of his career, next at the Boulevard, finally settling in at the Richfield Legion, Post 435, in 1967. Despite retiring once in 1986, he continued working there until September 2007, working as a doorman for the last several years.

Earl served many well-known people over the years, including Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Billy Martin, and Halsey Hall. He once nearly struck (purposely?) then-Twins-owner, Calvin Griffith, with a ball at a legion golf tournament.

In 1956, Earl would marry his loving wife of 40 years, Mary Agnes (Wolfe). Their two children, Mary and Bob, would be blessed to grow up in a house with much love and laughter.

After the kids were out of the house, Earl volunteered for the Sister’s Care program during the 90s and would drive a van for the St Ann’s group home prior to that. He didn’t take up golf until his 40s, but continued playing into his 80s, having a lot of good times with many friends. He traveled through out his life, going to South Africa in 2001 and China in 2004, as well as many closer destinations.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Ruth, his sister, Alice (Lund), and his wife, Mary Agnes.

He is survived by his children, Mary and Bob, his sister, Bess (Lorence), daughter-in-law, Steph (Julich) Chase, and many adoring nieces and nephews.
